Girls Travel Leagues
The Marshfield Youth Basketball travel program is open to all girls in grades 4-8. This program is an option for those players seeking a higher level of competition against teams from other towns. Players who make a travel team are expected to make basketball their primary winter sport and attend all games and practices. Please consider the increased level of commitment when deciding whether your child should tryout for a travel team.
Marshfield Youth Basketball sponsors girls travel teams in three separate leagues on the South Shore for grades 4 through 8.
The SOUTH SHORE GIRLS BASKETBALL LEAGUE (SSGBL), which is the most competitive league for grades 5-8, is made up of teams from 18 towns in the South Shore area. The teams play a regular season schedule of 16 games plus a possible tournament and play-offs. The games are played on Saturdays and Sundays.
The OLD COLONY BASKETBALL GIRLS LEAGUE (OCL), is a league structured specifically for players who don't make the South Shore League. The league is for grades 4-8. It is comprised of teams from 16 surrounding area towns. The teams play a regular season schedule of 12 games plus a possible tournament and play-offs. The games are played on Saturdays or Sundays.
The KINGSTON GIRLS TRAVEL LEAGUE is a league structured for girls that do not make the more competitive teams. For players in grades 4-8, all games are played at the Kingston Sports Center on Friday nights, Saturdays or Sundays.
There are links to the websites for each of the leagues in the menu on the left.
The regular season starts in early December and runs through the early March. The playoffs are held in the middle of March.
As travel teams, half of the games will be away games and require travel to gyms in other towns with the exception of the OCL 4th grade teams which play at the Indian Head School at Hanson. Directions to other gyms are posted on the websites of each league.
Practices are held in the evenings during the week at one of the gyms in Marshfield. Teams usually practice twice per week depending gym availability.
In order to play on the travel team you must TRYOUT. There are two tryout sessions for each team held in mid-October.
The travel program is more competitive than the Saturday Rec Program, and our goal is to field competitive teams and win games. However, these are not the only goals. The development of skills, character, and the TEAM concept, teaching the kids to compete, to believe in themselves, and to always give their best effort, are the most important goals of this program.
